Submission for Global Teacher Digital Narratives 2016
The idea for my digital narrative originated from my groups’ presentation on ‘changing schools for a changing world’, and our exploration of a utopian school, possibly one that exists beyond a magical warren.
The main theme of my narrative began as the persecution of transgender people and how as a global society we need to promote diversity, equity and social competence. However, the role of this digital classroom resource is to stimulate children’s’ critical thinking skills. Although the topic for the resource was based around the LGBTQI community, I chose not to include a specific reference to a transgender person/people. This will allow for more freedom in the classroom, in that the educator will be able to incorporate the resource within a lesson, or create a lesson around whichever minority he/she chooses. Alternatively, the educator can allow children to explore a minority or situation that is relevant to them as individuals, as a class or as part of a wider community.
The choice of a simple melodic structure and even simpler vocabulary was made with the specific intention for use in years 2 – 3, as per my particular field of Early Childhood Education (ACARA references below), I can however, envision this being used in higher levels of primary school.
Finally, due to the nature of the visual stimulus, lessons can be devised in which children create their own stories through stop-motion animation, this can also be used as a method of assessment.
