Submission for Global Teacher Digital Narratives 2016
There is a growing realisation amongst people of the world regarding our impact on the environment. When we consider that we depend entirely on our environment to provide resources to sustain our lives, and in fact those of all other living things on Earth, we can see why this should be a cause for concern. One of these most common environmental concerns involves pollution, more specifically littering,
Traditionally, there was a belief that simply teaching children (and adults) about the environment would result in changes in behaviour. However, research proved that this assumption was not valid and in order to bring about behavioural change, environmental education has to encompass more than a passive form of learning but a more ‘socially critical’ form that requires students to question actions of society and actually engage in positive solutions themselves (Taylor & Eames, 2009).
We have created this three minute digital narrative with the hope that as future educators we can work towards a more involved, transformative approach to environmental sustainability within our global classrooms.
